Thread: Anybody got the smarts to advise me on a DIY PA?

dunce Anybody got the smarts to advise me on a DIY PA?

I have all the best intentions to build a pair of full-range live sound speakers that will match the capabilities of my powered mixer. From my starting point of complete ignorance, I have come to a point where I think I have a workable design. Given that I'm a spastic idiot sometimes, I should probably get more knowlegable input on a few points before proceeding. Any takers?

if you have the time and want to do a carpentry project then just get plans from someone that already did the math

    cabinet size/speaker need to match

crossover parts and horn interact with woofer

    and parts aren't cheap

Main things to spec are power handling, woofer size, weight, just vocal or whole band, use with subwoofer?

I'd just read up on passive speakers and start shopping craigs list - save time and money

we use some old peavey SP-5's

Thanks for responding to my message in a bottle. It's too late to turn back from my initial impulse which lead to investments in time researching and money laid out for the low Hz woofers. Pride and folly will see this thru to its conclusion. CLGrandRapids netted me my powered mixer which on paper appears to be a match to the power limits of my full-frequency speaker plans. I learned tonight that a buddy knows an electrical engineer who'd be willing to give my design a check. If he gives it the thumbs-up, I'll wrap it up and post the results. It should be capable of 250 watts continuous output and come in at a little over $500.00.
