I'm 40, and I've decided I'll never have kids of my own.

It kind of saddens me, as I'll never have a little me, that loves me. All my friends my age have kids, and the kids are all 8 - 10 etc. I think I'm too old to have a baby, as it would mean I would have to work until I was at least 60. My current plan is to retire at 55. I do have my stepkids who I love dearly, so I've had a lot of the child rearing experiences.

When my grandma died, she was surrounded by family, I guess I'll die alone.

even if you have kids, there is no gurantee. you could spend 20 years loving and rearing them and there is still no gurantee that they will reciprocate the gesture when you get old and die.
